Sit on it.

By February 12, 2009How To, The Business

This morning, my children (Sophie 3, Jack 2) were sitting together on the floor, looking at photo albums and having a grand old time – when Sophie decided she’d had enough. She’s entered this sassy, bossy stage of late – and so, in rare form as usual, she jumped to her feet, hands full on her hips, and started barking directives at Jack:

Jackie! Pick that up. Jackie! Go find my horse! Jackie! Stop that right now!

She kept it up for a few minutes, rattling off orders – one after the next – while he ignored her and kept looking at his book.

Until he couldn’t take it any longer.

He looked up at her – and there was silence as they locked eyes for a nice, long moment.

Then, he stood up, knocked her over and sat on her.

What do you do with that nagging voice inside your head?

  • Such a beautiful story, such a gorgeous toddler moment, so perfectly captured!

Yes, I am so much more like Jack these days with my Sophie-like voice than I used to be!

I don’t tolerate it much anymore, that nagging,”who do you think you are not being all wound up about this or that” voice ~ I just don’t have it in me to feel bad for long!

What do I do? I ignore it, distract myself by finding something fabulous to do or at least think about it.

And when it’s REALLY pushy, I put on loud music & dance with my kids ~ and if I could, I’d push it down & sit on it too!

Way to go Jack! Probably not the behaviour that you want to reinforce but I’m glad he stood up for himself.

As for that voice inside me, it’s a little harder to sit on. I find that just ignoring it works the best for me up to a point but when it gets too much I have to change the scenery a little — physically as well as mentally.

Great story! It makes me wish for simpler times when I could do the same to those who nag me! I love learning things from toddlers – they have such a simple outlook on life. Maybe we should all be a litle more ‘toddler-ish’ in our daily lives – at least we would all know where we stand, right? Although I don’t know that my boss would be too keen on being sat on!

  • That is too funny. I did not expect that to happen. But I guess that’s what I’m going to have to do with the little nagging voice in my head.

This is funny, although it’s usually my 3yo(boy) who takes as much as he can before knocking down his 20mo sister. No matter which way it goes, I mutter, “Karma!” to myself and then break up the chaos that ensues.

  • Laughing. Out. Loud.

    Seriously. Belly hurts.

That, and I’m now thinking that I need to give my nagging voice the smackdown more often.

I wish I could have been there to see that … hilarious!

That is awesome! So glad you played the meme!
